We remember the days when we had just a few channels to choose from on the television. Then, the number of channels for cable TV expanded, and we could also watch movies by taking a trip to the local Blockbuster. Today, our options are unlimited with streaming services giving us the ability to watch whatever we want whenever we want.
The best part of using a streaming service is not only are there are so many options to choose from based on what type of programs you like to watch, but it’s typically more affordable compared to cable TV packages.
You can watch TV shows ranging from sports, home and garden, health and fitness, movies, and original series – either on your TV, tablet, computer, or cellphone. This provides a lot of flexibility if you travel often or like to watch TV in different areas of the house.
If you don’t have a smart TV (which comes with streaming applications already on the TV), you can buy an inexpensive device such as an Amazon Fire Stick or Roku to plug into your TV. Here are helpful videos on how to use Roku. These devices allow you to watch multiple streaming applications right on your TV.
Some of the top streaming services you should consider include:
- Amazon Prime Video – most of us have Amazon Prime where we order items to be delivered to our door with just a few clicks. If you do, it’s easy to access the video component using the same username and password where you can access the thousands of shows and movies they offer.
- Hulu – Hulu is a great alternative to having cable because of their subscription types. For the basic Hulu subscription, it is $5.99 per month which includes thousands of TV shows and movies. They do have bundle options to include Disney+ and ESPN which starts at $12.99 per month. You can also add other channels for additional fees including Showtime, HBO Max, Cinemax, and/or Starz.
- Netflix – Netflix is the most well-known streaming service out there and offers a wide variety of award-winning TV shows, movies, documentaries, and more. You can watch as much as you want, whenever you want without a single commercial for $8.99 per month.
Other streaming services to look into depending on your interests include Peacock which is the app for StreamingNBC and Paramount+ which is the app for CBS. There is also the newer Disney+ app which is great if you have visits from your grandchildren often.
Streaming can be a great way to spend your days and nights alone or with friends and family. You can catch up on classic shows like Golden Girls and I Love Lucy, watch episodes of your favorite game shows like Jeopardy, tune in to the latest Planet Earth documentary or catch new episodes of comedies like Grace and Frankie starring Jane Fonda.
Most streaming services have a monthly fee but if you do not have cable TV, many find it affordable with more to choose from. Keep in mind, if you eliminate cable TV, you will still need an internet provider which many have in a packaged bundle with their cable TV so its best to budget accordingly.
