Enjoying Your Summer in the New Normal

Dreams of getaways are now top of mind for most of us having been cooped up for many months.  While the idea of travel has changed, it doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy your summer and experience new adventures. Follow these tips and take in all that summer has to offer!

Check Ahead

A good rule of thumb is to first check your local and state recommendations when you make your travel plans as well as right before you head out.

Be sure and double-check websites for any places you intend on visiting. There may be new guidelines in effect, hours of operation may have changed, or parking may be limited for California State Parks and other facilities.

Try and Stay Local

Summer travel doesn’t have to be a trip to Europe or even Yosemite, Southern California has plenty of places to visit close by. And the beautiful beach and lake cities nearby provide a great opportunity to beat the heat for the day or a quick weekend getaway.

When you choose to stay close to home, you limit the amount of contact that you will need to have with others at airports, transportation, rest stops, restaurants, hotels, and facilities.

Plan to Be Outdoors

Outdoor activities are strongly recommended right now and the best way to keep your mind and body healthy. Consider camping, golfing, hiking, or taking a trip to a zoo and botanical garden that are open. And try to plan your day trips during less busy times and during cooler weather like early morning or late afternoon.

Be Creative

Of course, summer adventures are fun with our friends and family, but we still need to be careful about social gatherings. Continue to be creative in thinking of ways to connect. This could include setting up a “virtual” barbecue with friends or doing FaceTime with your grandkids to show them where you are and share your adventures with them virtually.

Bring Your Own…. Everything

If you decide to pack up and take a trip, the more that you bring with you, the less risk of exposure you will have.  Here is a list of items to pack your bag with:

  • A couple bottles of hand sanitizer
  • A few clean face masks
  • Toilet paper
  • Disinfectant wipes
  • Couple of pairs of disposable gloves
  • Snacks
  • Clean drinking water
  • Sunscreen and hat
  • Necessary medications and supplements
  • Well-stocked first aid kit
  • Health plan information (cards, phone numbers etc.)

Plan for Safety

Take time to consider your risk before you head out. Do a safety check for your summer plans and ask yourself:

  • Who will be there?
  • Can I keep 6 feet apart from others?
  • Will everyone wear a mask?
  • How long is the activity?
  • Are there reservations or is it first come, first served?
  • Is there a hospital nearby, just in case?

This summer is unlike any other and involves much more planning for travel– but that shouldn’t stop you from enjoying the season.

And before you head out and book your next trip, don’t forget:

  • Stay 6 feet apart from people that you do not live with is encouraged to protect against exposure to COVID-19. Pay attention to this distancing in congested areas such as parking lots, trailheads, and lines to the restroom.
  • Be sure to check the CDC’s health recommendations, as they are continuously changing.
  • Have a care plan in place in case for you and your loved ones sick.
  • Wash your hands as often as you can for at least 20 seconds each time
  • Wear a mask everywhere you go.
