5 Tips to Stay Healthy This Summer

By: Inter Valley Health Plan

Summer often makes us think of barbecues, family gatherings and days at the beach. The presence of COVID-19 has made this summer different where we are forced to find other ways to stay social and active. While our summer activities may have changed, one thing is for sure, your health should be a top priority.

Check out these 5 tips for to stay healthy this summer:

1. Hydration

A hot summer day seems to pair perfectly with an ice-cold drink, so make sure you are making wise drink choices. During hot weather, your body needs to replace the liquid and electrolytes that are lost through sweat and exercise. Alcohol, sugar, and caffeine can cause your body to lose fluids quicker than it is replaced. So, be sure and keep these hydration tips in mind:

  • Drink more water than usual, even before you are thirsty
  • Add flavorings to your water such as lemon, lime, or fresh fruit to make it more appealing
  • Enjoy other drinks in moderation but always with a glass of water

2. Immunizations

Immunizations are vital to your health, especially this year, as they can prevent deadly diseases and help decrease symptoms of common illnesses such as the flu.

Make a quick call to your doctor about the following:

  • Ensure you are up to date on your vaccines. Influenza shots are needed every year. Tetanus and Diphtheria require a booster every 10 years.
  • Ask where you can easily get the vaccine(s). This could be your doctor’s office or a pharmacy.
  • Watch closely for symptoms of COVID-19 and talk to your doctor about getting tested right away if you have any symptoms.

Keep in mind that most vaccines are covered by your Medicare plan at little to no cost to you.

3. Indoor Exercise

Exercising inside your own home is one way to keep fit and active while staying safe.

For exercise, consider the following:

  • Joining an online exercise class
  • Intentionally adding extra movements to your daily routines
  • Meeting up with a friend virtually to workout together
  • Set timers in your home to remind you to move around

4. Wear a Mask

A cloth face mask limits the spread of viruses through the air. For a mask to provide protection it needs to be worn properly.

Remember to wear your mask the right way:

  • Covering your mouth and nose
  • Secured behind your ears
  • Fit snugly around the top of your nose, cheeks and under your chin

At the Right Time

  • Put on before you enter a public setting
  • At work in common or shared spaces
  • At the doctor’s office
  • On public transit
  • When waiting in line

And don’t forget to wash your masks and hands immediately upon returning home.

5. Diet

The last building block for a healthy summer is fortifying your body with adequate nutrition. Summer is the perfect time to enjoy the abundance of fresh fruits and vegetables available.

When planning your summer menu, aim to include a variety of foods that are high in nutrients and from all the food groups including:

  • Vegetables, especially green, leafy vegetables
  • Fruits such as berries
  • Whole grains
  • High quality proteins
  • Dairy products and oils
